Technical Housekeeping

I've been doing some backend work tonight on the frontpage, mainly fiddling with how the comments are displayed and fixing the XML syndication. If you happen to get any strange error messages while viewing the site or otherwise see something out of place, please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks!

Tetsuya Nomura Quashes FFVII Remake Rumors

IGN has revealed a key detail from a recent interview in the Japanese magazine Dorimaga. Speaking on the subject of Final Fantasy VII, Tetsuya Nomura stated, "It appears that there are often overseas rumors like 'Are you currently developing a VII remake?' My apologies, but we're absolutely not making [such a game]." FFVII director Yoshinori Kitase noted, "However, when we ask the staff who are making FFXIII why they entered the company, there are many people who say, 'I'm an FFVII fan, I also want to do a remake.'" In response, Nomura added, "We of course know ourselves what the fans want so we'd like to continue thinking up a variety of things. As long as there are people who want to make it and people who are waiting for it, we don't want to proclaim 'the end.'"

Also featured in IGN's article are some interesting tidbits about the development of FFVII's plot, including the revelation that producer Hironobu Sakaguchi's original vision seems to have resembled a detective story. The full piece may be read here.

Fanfiction: Five Years

We have a very special addition to the Fanfiction Archive this week, written by our very own Reeve especially for Blue Shinra's fifth anniversary.

Five Years follows the story of Cloud in the world of Final Fantasy Tactics, where he must travel through time and space in order to get home. Of course, there's nothing wrong with a brief stop along the way... is there?

Rated PG. This story contains some Final Fantasy VII and Tactics spoilers. Check it out!

This Month's Theme, Crisis Core Update, Creator Interviews, More

Our theme for June is dedicated to those loveable Shinra henchmen, the Turks. Thanks goes out to Sapphirez for creating this month's banner artwork! As usual, all of our previous themes can be found on the Tenth Anniversary page; in addition, the original artwork used in several of the banners may now be found there as well!

This is a little late, but a recent article in Dengeki PlayStation has revealed a few new details about Crisis Core. Right now, the game's development is nearing completion (director Hajime Tabata estimates that it's 90% done) and will contain 30 hours of gameplay for the main story; when sidequests and such are taken into account, the estimated completion time swells to 100 hours. Several details about the plot and gameplay system are also discussed, and of course, there are plenty of spoilers throughout. You can read more details from the article here. (Related link: Forums Discussion)

For today's site update, we have added two noteworthy interviews with FFVII's Yoshinori Kitase and Tetsuya Nomura to the Press Clippings archive. The first, which originally appeared in the UK gaming magazine Edge, became famous amongst fans as one of the first interviews where FFVII's creators discuss Aerith's death and the intentions behind it (thanks goes out to Tuulisti for the transcription). The second is from the US mag Electronic Gaming Monthly, and touches on FFVII's impact, the game's characters, and the Compilation.

Also new today on the site are small updates to Miscellaneous Cameos and References and the FAQ, a new piece of Cait Sith fanart by me, and the reopening of submissions.

Finally, I'd like to announce the departure of Seb from the staff—on behalf of the other staff members, we'll miss him and wish him well.
