06/04/2007: "Tetsuya Nomura Quashes FFVII Remake Rumors"

IGN has revealed a key detail from a recent interview in the Japanese magazine Dorimaga. Speaking on the subject of Final Fantasy VII, Tetsuya Nomura stated, "It appears that there are often overseas rumors like 'Are you currently developing a VII remake?' My apologies, but we're absolutely not making [such a game]." FFVII director Yoshinori Kitase noted, "However, when we ask the staff who are making FFXIII why they entered the company, there are many people who say, 'I'm an FFVII fan, I also want to do a remake.'" In response, Nomura added, "We of course know ourselves what the fans want so we'd like to continue thinking up a variety of things. As long as there are people who want to make it and people who are waiting for it, we don't want to proclaim 'the end.'"

Also featured in IGN's article are some interesting tidbits about the development of FFVII's plot, including the revelation that producer Hironobu Sakaguchi's original vision seems to have resembled a detective story. The full piece may be read here.

I cannot express how disapointed I am about this. My copy of VII just carked-it, and a remake was my last chance at playing it again. Honestly, I think I'm about to cry. They may as well say "It's been 10 years, we gave you two sequals, two prequals, leave us alone!" It sure would save time, and stop the endless stream of disapointment.

Why can't you just buy another copy of FFVII? >_>

I personally find the article to be a little bit contradictory. Nomura states in the beginning that they will “absolutely not” make a FFVII remake; however at the end he says, "We of course know ourselves what the fans want so we'd like to continue thinking up a variety of things. As long as there are people who want to make it and people who are waiting for it, we don't want to proclaim 'the end'."
That last line leaves a glimmer of hope for a FFVII remake, almost taking it back square one if you will, as it seems like Nomura is saying if there is still a high enough demand for a FFVII remake in later years they may yet make one, since both the fans and the staff want one. I wouldn't completely give up hope, things can still fall on either side of the fence.

TheMissingCloud: Reread the first sentence-- Nomura says that they are "absolutely not" currently working on an FFVII remake, not that they will never make one in the future.

I noticed the currently part in the sentence as well, but di dnot want to get my hopes up. He did not say taht "We are NEVER going to remake the game!" although, I recall reading one article where is was said taht FFVII does not need to be remade because there is nothing wrong with the game, its perfect. We all know there are plently of things missing and athings left unexplained. I just hope that maybe since they know that's what we want, that they won't reveil any thing until they are almost done! AND that the game won't hurt my wallet! >_<

I still think that from a purely artistic (lol) standpoint, the money spent on the compilation and flood of FFVII merchandising would have been better spent on a straight remaking of FFVII.

But, however sucessful, that would only have brought in one sale opportunity per fan wouldn't it? ;)

"Hot Blooded Detective Joe" sounds hilarious. A name like that together with the dystopia of FFVII would've resulted in satire. I'm glad that they did let Cid personify the humor instead :D

"Continue thinking up a variety of things" - wonder what else SE has in mind for the FFVII compilation's next 10 years?

What the FFXIII staff said was quite interesting! XD
