Last Update of 2006 / The Year in Review

Just one tiny site update for this evening: a correction has been made to one of the AC Errors & Mistakes in the Compilation of FFVII section.

2006 certainly was an eventful year for Final Fantasy VII fans: Advent Children was released outside of Japan for the first time, with North America and the UK getting the DVD almost simultaneously. Another Compilation entry, Dirge of Cerberus, made its debut in Japan and elsewhere, but proved not to be the masterful game sequel that fans expected. Meanwhile, English-language screenshots of Before Crisis were shown at what was to be the last E3 Expo, but this game still has not yet been officially released outside of Japan. Finally, and most recently, a trailer for Crisis Core debuted which, for many of us, offered our first real glimpse at this most elusive of Compilation titles.

AC and DC weren't the only things FFVII fans had to look forward to this year: the cameo-laden Kingdom Hearts II finally came out, and the wait proved to be well worth it. And speaking of cameos, an updated version of Final Fantasy Tactics was recently announced for the PSP. Finally, for FFVII collectors, there were plenty of new items to choose from, including a "Kingdom Hearts Formation Arts" figure of Cloud, a pair of magnificent (and expensive!) Cloud and Sephiroth statues, and (my personal favorite) the Advent Children artbook Reunion Files, which features tons of info in both English and Japanese as well as rare images and artwork.

In 2007, we will see the release of Crisis Core, at least in Japan; meanwhile, a North American and/or European release of Before Crisis is still very much up in the air. However, perhaps the most interesting thing about 2007 is that it marks the tenth anniversary of Final Fantasy VII's release! For a single game to have remained so popular and beloved for so long is truly a rare thing; it really is a good time to be an FFVII fan.

With that said, we at the Citadel wish all of our friends, contributors, and visitors a happy and healthy 2007!

Holiday fan fiction update

My last fan fiction update of the year and it's quite a big one. First up, three new chapters have been added to Enkida's epic Ain't Like I Planned. Expect more from this in the new year, and remember, it's for mature readers only.

Next we have new author Dragon John, who has sent in his short story, Family Ties. This one is rated PG-13 for mild violence.

And finally, we have a rather bizarre and humorous Christmas themed entry from Citadel user Midnightsunpm. Walking in a winter ambush land is rated G, so check it out.

That’s all from me. Keep submissions coming in at the usual place, and I'll see you in the new year. Happy holidays!

Crisis Core at Jump Festa

A playable demo of Crisis Core was shown at the Jump Festa event last weekend and both GAF and IGN have some write-ups so if you're interested in just what this game is going to be like to play, go and check them out. Both articles are relatively spoiler free but if you'd rather play it safe then the general consensus seems to be highly positive.

Also, please don't forget the Citadel's Mini Kingdom Hearts Fanfiction Competition. The deadline is this Friday in case you'd forgotten so hurry up and get your entries in!

Happy Holidays!

Though I did a non-FFVII holiday fanart last year, I've taken up the tradition again for this year and completed the piece to the right. To see the full-sized version, check out the Happy Holidays gallery under Fanart.

Elsewhere, I have another new fanart piece, a Dirge of Cerberus and Sam & Max crossover, which can be found here. We also have a new fan-artist in our gallery, Cloudyfan, who has contributed a gorgeous comic book-style Advent Children piece.

Finally, don't forget about our mini Kingdom Hearts competition! The deadline for entries has been extended a day to Friday, December 22nd, so get them in soon!

Crisis Core TGS Trailer Now Available

Back during this past September's Tokyo Game Show, a trailer for Crisis Core was shown behind closed doors. Recently, Square Enix released this video to a special "members only" Japanese website, and since then, it has found its way to the Internet at large.

The trailer, which can be seen via this Joystiq post, features Zack interacting with a number of familiar characters from FFVII and previous Compilation titles. There's also a very brief glimpse of the battle system, which seems to prominently feature a slot-based attack. Let's hope this game turns out to be a better effort than the disappointing Dirge of Cerberus. As usual, be forewarned that there are potential spoilers in this trailer.
