About the yellow orb in the close to final sequence, I believe this is not materia of any kind. This looks to me to be the sun. In the trip to fight the final Sephiroph, Cloud seems to be traveling through the planet's lifestream. As he does this he becomes sort of one with the planet. He sees through the planet's eyes and views the sun. This would explain the so called "bubbles" that appear to be stars, when in fact they really are stars. I feel this is all the "yellow orb" is there to signify.
