(Please note that I have not played ff7 in a while so my theories may be a little vague but I'll try my best to explain what part of the game I'm talking about)

When Sephiroth uses the Black materia everyone thinks there is no way to stop Meteor, but they were wrong...

Do you remember when you first meet Aeris and she talks about materia.. you ask if she has any (I'm not exactly sure what she says) and she says yes she has a materia that was her mothers, her REAL mothers(A Cetra), and she says that it cannot do anything. Cloud says she probably just doesn't know how to use it, but she says she does it just doesn't DO anything. Or is it she really DOESN'T know? She needs to visit the Temple of the Ancients first.. so that the knowledge of the Ancients can show her how...

Somewhere in the game there is something about how meteor hit before and all the Cetra gave their lives to heal the planet (???), that is why the Northern Crater is there. I beleive that they were praying to the White Materia, just like Aeris was, except that they were too late and meteor struck them and killed them as they stopped it from destroying earth. This calls for some speculation I know but I'm pretty sure somewhere in the game they said that Aeris' mother was a strong Cetra, and Hojo says that Aeris may be even stronger. I think that she was praying to the White Materia to stop the Meteor, when Sephiroth killed her.. everyone thought she had failed but then why at the end of the game do we see this shining orb? Maybe it is as you say.. some kind of vision of the promised land but I think that it is the white materia, which by the way was in a vision like Aeris was at Northern Crater not actually there.

Although Aeris was killed she had obviously done enough to awaken the powers of the White materia (Ultimate curative magic???) and she stopped the black materia (Ultimate destructive magic).

Some evidence you say? Well when Bugenhagen travels with you to the Ancient City and uses the Key thingie, we see Aeris in the waterfall right? Well I'm positive something was mentioned about the White materia stopping the meteor.

Hi again, I've been reading through that guide and have found evidence for all of my claims, except for Aeris, she's really 18% less powerful than her mother, or so Hojo says anyway.

This scene is in the church when you fall from the reactor.

Aeris "Say, do you have any materia?"
Cloud "Yes, some."
"Nowadays you can find materia anywhere."

Aeris "But mine is special. It's good for absolutely nothing."

Cloud ".....good for nothing? You probably just don't know how to use it."

Aeris "No, I do... it just doesn't do anything."
"I feel safe just having it. It was my mother's...."

That says something about it being given to her by a Cetra, her mother.

For information about the first 'Meteor', check 'Scene 94 - Gast's Videos' in the script for disk 2.

Also this is where Bugenhagen talks about the White Materia at the Ancient City.

Bugenhagen "The knowledge of the Ancients swirling around here is telling me one thing." "The planet's in a crisis..." "A crisis beyond human power or endless time." "It says, when the time comes, we must search for 'Holy'."

Cloud "Holy?"

Bugenhagen "Holy... the ultimate White Magic. Magic that might stand against Meteor. Perhaps our last hope to save the planet from Meteor." "If a soul seeking Holy reaches the planet, it will appear." "Ho Ho Hoooo." "Meteor, Weapon, everything will disappear." "Perhaps, even ourselves."

Cloud "Even us!?"

Bugenhagen "It is up to the planet to decide." "What is best for the planet. What is bad for the planet." "All that is bad will disappear. That is all." "Ho Ho Hooo." "I wonder which we humans are?"

Cloud "Search for Holy... How do we do it?"

Bugenhagen "Speak to the planet." "Get the White Materia... This will bond the Planet to humans." "Then speak to the planet." "If our wish reaches the planet, the White Materia will begin to glow a pale green."

Cloud "...This is the end." "Aerith had the White Materia..." "But when Aerith died, it fell from the altar..." "That's why...... this is the end."

After you get the key and put it in the music box thingie, Bugenhagen talks. The White Materia is shown in the bottom of the pool, glowing pale green.

Cloud "...It's glowing."

Bugenhagen "Ho Ho Hooo!! It's pale green!!"

Cloud "...Aerith. Aerith has already prayed for Holy." "...After I gave the Black Materia to Sephiroth...... Aerith's words came into my dreams..." "She said, she was the only one who could stop Sephiroth...... And to do that, there was a secret here..." "That was Holy...... That's why, she had the White Materia. Aerith knew about here... and what she had to do." "Aerith has left us great hope. But, it cost her her life... her future..." "I'm sorry... Aerith. I should have figured this out sooner." "...You left us without saying a word...... It was all so sudden, so I couldn't think..." "That's why it took so long for me to find out... But, Aerith... I understand now." "Aerith... I'll do the rest."

Tifa "You mean, WE..."

Cid "The big gift the flower girl left for us... It'd be sad if we didn't finish it!"

Cloud "Thank you... Aerith." "Aerith's voice has already reached the Planet. Just look at the glow of the White Materia." "But...... how about Holy? How come Holy isn't moving?" "Why?"

Bugenhagen "Something's getting in its way."

Cloud "......Him......" "He's the only one that could do it." "...Sephiroth. Where are you?"
