Although you'd never know it by looking at her, Yuffie comes from a long line of Ninja. She forced herself into the group just to get a "certain something". She's sneaky, arrogant, and "way" selfish. But with her super shuriken and her special skills, there isn't anyone else you'd rather have on your side in a fight.

From the Game:

Yuffie is the first of FFVII's optional playable characters, who can be found in the forests near Junon or Gongaga. After engaging—and winning—a battle with this "Mystery Ninja", Cloud and his friends find themselves in conversation with her. Depending on what Cloud does and says, this ninja will either run off, stealing some of the party's gil in the process, or insist that she join the party. Upon doing so, she introduces herself as Yuffie.

The headstrong daughter of Wutai's Lord Godo, Yuffie bears a particularly strong grudge against the Shinra for defeating her once-proud nation during the Wutai War, reducing it to a lowly tourist-trap status. However, this deep-seated resentment takes a backseat to Yuffie's love of the brightly colored magical orbs called materia.

Shortly after the party's first adventure in Rocket Town, they have the option of going to Wutai for the first time. Upon landing there, Yuffie disappears, taking all of the group's materia with them. Cloud and the others cross the rocky terrain to Wutai village, whereupon they case the town for Yuffie, encountering the vacationing Reno, Rude, and Elena in the process. After being tricked by Yuffie in her basement, Cloud once again pursues her, only to discover that both she and Elena have been captured by Don Corneo. Cloud and his friends team up with Reno and Rude to rescue the two young women, and Yuffie finally returns the group's materia.

Yuffie sticks with the party, aiding them during their quest. Most notably, she joins Cait Sith and Barret during the latter's rescue in Junon; like Cait Sith, she is initially disguised as a reporter.

Later on, the party can return to Wutai so that Yuffie can complete the trials in the Pagoda of the Five Gods. The final trial is a battle against her own father; after defeating him, Yuffie reveals her true feelings about why she's fighting for the first time.

Yuffie pops up in all of the major Compilation projects, including Advent Children, Before Crisis, Dirge of Cerberus (in which she has a significant supporting role), and Crisis Core (in which she is the only character besides Zack who is playable).
