A mystical man, stern and upright while at the same time dark and mysterious. His past connection with Shinra, Inc. is what made him join Cloud and the others. He may seem frail at first glance, but hidden inside his body lurks a fearsome power.

The second of FFVII's optional playable characters, Vincent can be found by playing a "game" in the Shinra Mansion to find out the combination of the safe on the second floor. One of the items within this safe is a Basement Key, which can be used to unlock the coffin room that lies beneath the Mansion. Asleep in the coffin in the center of the room is Vincent Valentine.

Vincent was put to sleep several years ago, while employed with Shinra as a Turk. At the time, he was stationed in Nibelheim, where he became acquainted with Lucrecia, an assistant to Professor Gast. However, Lucrecia chose Hojo over Vincent, and later gave birth to Hojo's son Sephiroth as part of an experiment. Vincent objected to this human experimentation and told Hojo as much; in retaliation, Hojo conducted experiments on Vincent and locked him away in the Shinra Mansion's basement. Upon being awakened by Cloud and his friends, he decides to join their party in order to pursue Hojo.

After several adventures with the group, Vincent meets Lucrecia again in a crystalline cave behind a hard-to-reach waterfall, where she asks him if Sephiroth, her son, is still alive. He tells Lucrecia that Sephiroth is dead.

Vincent is the main character of Dirge of Cerberus, and also makes appearances in Advent Children and Before Crisis.
