Bright and optimistic, Tifa always cheers up the others when they're down. But don't let her looks fool you, she can decimate almost any enemy with her fists. She is one of the primary members of AVALANCHE. A childhood friend of Cloud's, she has strong feelings for him, but would never admit it.

From the Game:

Tifa Lockheart was born and raised in Nibelheim to parents who lived in one of the largest houses in town. As a child, she had several friends; Cloud, who lived next door to her, was not among them.

When Tifa was still a girl, her mother died; overcome with grief, she ran away from home and into the Nibel Mountains, which lay beyond her hometown. Unbeknownst to Tifa, she was followed by Cloud, who came upon her after she fell and suffered a concussion. Afterwards, Tifa's father blamed Cloud for the accident; despite this, the two children began to form a friendship.

Seven years prior to the start of the game, they met by the well that stood in the center of Nibelheim, on the night before Cloud was to depart for Midgar. They made a promise that if Tifa was ever in trouble, her hero Cloud would come to rescue her.

Two years later, Cloud and another one of Tifa's friends, Johnny, were far away from home, while Tifa herself remained in Nibelheim where she was trained in the martial arts by a wandering teacher named Zangan. When Sephiroth visited the town with Zack and a pair of Shinra MPs, she guided them to the Mako reactor on Mt. Nibel, but was not allowed inside of the reactor itself. Some days later, Sephiroth set fire to Nibelheim and left for the reactor to free his "mother", Jenova. Inside of the reactor, Tifa was found with her father, who had been killed by Sephiroth. An enraged Tifa picked up Sephiroth's sword and confronted the warrior himself, only to become injured in their struggle. She fell unconscious before one of the MPs—Cloud—found her and carried her out of harm's way before dealing with Sephiroth.

While Tifa was still unconscious, she was carried away from the reactor by Zangan before Hojo and his men had a chance to get to her. Zangan took Tifa to Midgar in search of medical attention; once he found it, he promptly disappeared. Five years passed, and during that time, Tifa came to work in the Seventh Heaven bar in Midgar's Sector Seven slums. She also befriended Barret Wallace and joined his group AVALANCHE.

One day, shortly before AVALANCHE's inaugural bombing mission, Tifa happened upon Cloud at a Midgar train station. She was confused and worried by some of his erratic behavior—such as his claim that their last meeting was five years ago, instead of the seven that Tifa remembered. Despite this, out of fear that she would lose sight of him again, she recruited him for the imminent AVALANCHE bombing run. Throughout the subsequent journey, she remained puzzled by Cloud's strange behavior, but accompanied him despite it, even to the point of watching over him at Mideel's clinic during his bout with Mako sickness.

After Ultimate Weapon's attack on Mideel, an earthquake struck the town, causing the pair to fall into the Lifestream, where they encountered visions from Cloud's past. It is here where Tifa learned the truth about where Cloud was five years ago, and how he fulfilled the promise made at the well.
