Even amongst the elite troops of SOLDIER, Sephiroth is known to be the best. His past is locked away in a confidential file held by Shinra, Inc. His giant sword, which only he can handle, has extremely destructive power. Said to have disappeared in a battle years ago, his current whereabouts are unknown.

From the Game:

Sephiroth was born approximately thirty years before the start of the game, in the small village of Nibelheim. He was the product of the Jenova Project, an experiment conducted by Professor Gast, Hojo, and Lucrecia to create a powerful soldier by infusing an unborn child with Jenova cells. His childhood is shrouded in mystery—even he did not know about his true birthplace or parents (Hojo and Lucrecia) for several years. Instead, he grew up believing that his real mother's name with Jenova, though he did harbor a sort of disdain towards Hojo and reverance towards Gast.

With his Masamune blade in hand, Sephiroth grew up to become a leading member of SOLDIER, and a famous hero of the Wutai War. After the war, he took on a fateful assignment in Nibelheim, accompanied by a SOLDIER First Class named Zack, an MP named Cloud, and a second, nameless MP. While investigating the Mako reactor in the town's nearby mountains, he came upon a door, above which was marked the name "JENOVA". Confused by this, he turned to the vast library in the Shinra Mansion's basement for answers. What he found—mainly that Jenova was a Cetra—shocked him into madness, and he set Nibelheim ablaze and killed most of its residents. From there, he returned to the reactor and forced himself into Jenova's room, where he removed her head and had a brief altercation with Zack. After Zack's defeat, Sephiroth found himself being confronted by Cloud, who, in an incredible display of strength, flung the SOLDIER into the hot Mako beneath them. This is how Sephiroth died, but due to Jenova's influence, his spirit lived on in the Lifestream.

Five years after the incident in Nibelheim, Sephiroth's spirit manipulated various "clones" that had been conveniently created by Hojo; these Sephiroth clones, once Nibelheim residents, who were injected with Jenova cells after the incident. With the clones' assistance, Sephiroth was able to commit various misdeeds, including freeing Jenova from the Shinra Building, killing President Shinra, and killing Aeris. One clone in particular, Cloud, enabled Sephiroth to obtain the Black Materia. Sephiroth then used this materia to summon Meteor, which would've created a large wound in the Planet; he planned to position itself at the center of this wound and absorb all the healing energy that came his way, becoming a sort of "god" in the process. Sephiroth's plans were thwarted by the White Materia's spell Holy, which Aeris cast before her death, and Cloud and his friends freed from the villain's grip.
