Strategy | Chocobo Breeding Guide

This is a simple guide to breeding the fabled Gold Chocobo, the ultimate mode of transport in Final Fantasy VII. With it, all locations on the World Map are accessible. However, breeding a Gold Chocobo will take some time, and a lot of effort.

The Chocobo Ranch The start of the breeding process requires three Carob nuts. These can be gained at the Gold Saucer's Wonder Square for 500 GP each. Alternatively, travel north to the grassland below Bone Village. Explore the local area until you encounter a red dragon (Vlakorados). The Carob Nut can be stolen from this monster, or it can be won by defeating it.

Next, travel east to Goblin Island. Explore the island's forest until you encounter Goblins. Fight these monsters continuously until you win (or are able to steal) a Zeio nut. This second step can actually be done later. Apparently it becomes easier to find a Zeio nut further in the breeding process.

Now you will need to catch Chocobos. With the Chocobo Lure materia equipped, retrieve chocobos from the tracks near Mideel and the Gold Saucer. After you send them to the ranch, Choco Billy will tell you what kind of chocobos they are. If one is "good" and the other is "great", and they are of the opposite sex, you can mate them with a Carob Nut and they should give birth to a Green or Blue Chocobo.

Mate them again with a Carob Nut. If you can't wait that long (it takes an hour for them to become "matable" again), you can catch two more "good" and "great" Chocobos. Mate them with a Carob nut and you will get a Blue or Green Chocobo.

You must have one Blue / Green male Chocobo and one Blue / Green female Chocobo at the end of this process (they must be of opposite colors and sex). Once these two Chocobos have been bred, it is recommended that you feed them Sylkis Greens and race them at the Gold Saucer until they reach A or S-class, in order to make the next round of breeding a bit easier.

Mate these two Chocobos with a Carob Nut and you should get a Black Chocobo. If not, reset the game and repeat until you are successful.

Afterwards, land near the snowy Chocobo tracks near Icicle Inn and catch a "wonderful" Chocobo. This Chocobo must be the opposite sex of your black one.

Feed this Chocobo Sylkis Greens and race it until it is A or S-class. Mate this Chocobo with the Black Chocobo using the Zeio Nut. If all goes well, you should soon find the fabled Gold Chocobo in your stall.
