Additional Little Details on the Remake

Kotaku spoke to Adam Boyes, PlayStation's head of third-party developer relations, about keeping some of this past E3's biggest reveals secret. Apparently, Sony has known about the remake for about a year now.

The remake is described as being a "partnership" with Square Enix, though it's unclear as to whether this entails Sony helping to fund its development. Also, the length of time that the remake will be exclusive to the PS4 will be disclosed sometime before its release, though what other platforms it will appear on have not yet been confirmed.

Some Square Enix Press Conference Highlights

Square Enix just held their E3 press conference, where they showed a mix of games from their various studios around the world. Of particular interest to FFVII fans is the news that the original game is receiving an iOS port, joining the likes of the Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy IV DS remakes. The trailers for World of Final Fantasy, a PS4 and PS Vita title featuring characters from multiple FFs, and the FFVII remake were shown again. There was also the announcement of an English-language version of the Final Fantasy Portal mobile app, which is due out this summer.

In Kingdom Hearts news, the latest trailer for Kingdom Hearts III was shown, which mainly focused on gameplay footage. A mobile game called Kingdom Hearts: Unchained Key, which will tie into KH3's story, was also revealed.

Other games shown included Just Cause 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, Hitman, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and two particularly interesting announcements: a NieR sequel being developed in partnership with Platinum Games and with ex-Cavia people on staff, and "Project Setsuna", a completely original JRPG being developed by a new internal studio.

First Press Assets for the FFVII Remake

We've received the first press assets for the tentatively titled "Final Fantasy VII Remake". To the right are a pair of screenshots from the trailer; click on them for the full-sized images.

The official press release follows after the cut. There is not much new information in the main body text, save for the confirmation of three key members of the original FFVII staff's involvement in this new project (Yoshinori Kitase producing, Kasushige Nojima on scenario, and Tetsuya Nomura directing), plus a link to the official site. However, there is an interesting tidbit in the copyright notice at the end: both Tetsuya Nomura and Roberto Ferrari (The Last Remnant, Song Summoner, Final Fantasy XV) are credited with the character designs.

For further FFVII Remake discussion and information, including the E3 trailer, please visit the FFVII Remake Megathread in the forums. As usual, we will keep you all posted with the latest information as soon as it comes to our attention.

ETA: Added some of Ferarri's previous credits.

Final Fantasy VII Remake in the Works - Not a Rumor!

Looks like Sony and Square Enix are going to be keeping us busy here at the Citadel for the next year or so: the long-rumored remake of Final Fantasy VII is happening, and will initially be exclusive to PS4. Announced just moments ago at Sony's E3 press conference, the short teaser trailer featured glimpses of Midgar (including "South Edge" as a train stop… hmm…) and familiar touches such as Barret's gun-arm and Cloud's Buster Sword.

Of course, we will keep you all posted on the latest details. In the meantime, come discuss this planet-shattering news in the forums!
