07/23/2008: "Rumor Mongering: Final Fantasy VII on PS3"

As expected, a big rumor has surfaced thanks to recent cryptic comments made by Square Enix personnel. This time around, PlayStation LifeStyle has posted a rumor that the PS3 will be getting Final Fantasy VII in some form—a remake or new Compilation entry—and that it will be exclusive to the platform. In addition, the original FFVII is rumored to be surfacing on the PlayStation Network download service before the end of the year.

As CloudANDTidus noted in the comments of our post about the upcoming DKΣ3713 announcement, the most recent episode of 1UP Yours hinted that whatever will be announced at the event will swing Square Enix's focus away from the Xbox 360 and back to PS3, which only serves to strengthen this rumor. In addition, game industry tipster Surfer Girl has alledged that Square Enix is remaking games for PSN, but said games are "not full-fledged remakes", which leads one to wonder if FFVII is due for release on PSN as an enhanced port.

Square Enix's official line on the topic? It's no surprise; according to Eurogamer, the company has dismissed these developments as "rumor and speculation".

Final Fantasy VII on PSN, so that it can be played on the PS3 and PSP, would be very nice.

I sort of like this enhanced port idea. They cant drift off too far and can still add some things in.

no no no, this isn't enough. The only outcome anyone will like is a remake of ff7, not just putting the old one up on psn, or psp that is boring. A ff13 quality game with the full, but unchanged story line is the best route. FF7 brought you into amazing cities, with so much freedom for the gamer. Now to imagine that but with ff13 ps3 power. 3d everything! Flush! but NO tomb raider style playing either! sigh. I should just work at squre-enix...

"The only outcome anyone will like"?

Not quite. Look at the other comments and you'll see two that like the idea of rereleasing the original game. Actually, make that three comments; I would love for it to happen myself.

If the original is so good, why not just stick with that? There's too many ways in which a remake can go wrong.

i would personally like to see a remake of the game. i would just like an update on the graphics and maybe an extra side quest or two to keep it fresh. i would hope they wouldnt change the battle system to the action style (i love turn based fighting) or do anything else that would ruin it for me

Well, if it comes to choose between action style fights and turn-based ones, I can't decide. Why? Because both have their + and -. For example, action fight can be won by bashing "this damn button" until opponents deaths, while in turn-based you can do the same but... it takes forever if enemy have lot of hp. But, in turn-based there is more strategy and thinking about each move which leads to less hp/mp/item loss than in action one (play CC:FF7 again on hard mode... you will see what I am talking about).

Best thing SQUARE could do, is implement BOTH original FF7 turn-based style and also Crisis Core like one.

Though, I don't want a remake that badly, I prefer continuation of FF7 = FFVII-2 or something. Let story move further, not make it still and froze it in time.

Cheers, Jake.

At this point they have revisited every previous FF game and ported it for a more modern system. Square-Enix is not stupid and eventually they will come around and do the right thing. Especially with a 15 year anniversary not too far away, I wouldn't be surprised if sometime in 2009 they mention they are bringing an enhanced version of the game to PS3. If they added in more of the back story during the game or a few hours playing as the Turks, that wouldn't be so bad either.
