01/17/2007: "And Now, Some Disheartening News"

A pair of German teenagers recently committed two murders and a kidnapping; fortunately, they gave themselves up to the authorities. Of course, this wouldn't normally be news for a site of this nature, but the two carried out their crimes under the aliases "Sephiroth" and "Reno". In addition, it seems like the German press noted that the boys had Final Fantasy VII installed on their computer.

According to the IGN article about the incident, "In Germany, Final Fantasy VII is now being referred to as a 'Killerspiele'; which translates as 'killer game'." With that said, it's worth noting that Germany has had a long history of video game censorship, one of the latest examples being a law currently being considered for passage that would make it a jailable offense to play certain games.

On behalf of the FFVII Citadel, our hearts go out to the victims in this tragic occurrence. We also find it unfortunate that a game which promotes such positive themes as environmentalism, heroism, and self-confidence could be misinterpreted as a "killer game".

It sickens me to see how officials seem to blame the videogames instead of peers or the family that could have prevented this. Next thing you know, Mario would be banned because people learn bad habits from eating psychedelic mushrooms to get high, or the officials would see jumping on goomba as flagrantly violent and offensive.

"Killer game"? No. Stupid fucking kids. Such backwards blame is broken ethically and logically.

Hmm. I've been listening to the news over here and they haven't really even mentioned FF7 at all; though the usual reports are flying through the air about censorship, it seems they want to target games more like 'Doom' and 'Rainbow Six' style. Strangely enough, they did take a shot at FF*11* in the mainstream news, which seemed pretty weird to me. However, from my perspective, there is not a lot of sudden FF7 'hating' going on in the mainstream or even in the media.

Enkida- That's good to know (though the FFXI thing does sound baffling). Perhaps it was just one small corner of the German media that IGN got the news from-- but it's still disheartening that a game like FFVII had to be mentioned at all.

Our thoughts are with the victims of course, but there is no need to blame this on such a non-violent game. They probably had porn on that computer as well. Want to blame that as well while you’re at it?

Idiots.

STUPID FREAKING KIDS.i have been a fan of the game since its release and spent a lot of my free time these last 10 yrs exploring its hidden theames. it truely sickens me that these two use the name of one of the only decent games left on the market as there allias.it also sickens me that the media would promote a game with such great life lessons as a tool to of murderers.
Last but certainly not least my heart goes out to the families of all thoes involved with this tragedy. i would allso like to send my sympathies to thoes in germany who may soon have to deal with some very unfair censorships.

They always have to point the fingers at the media, it’s the music, the tv, the rap, they need someone and something to blame. I feel that blaming FFVII just because of Sephiroth and Reno (if anything Reno showed them how to be bad at their job while drunk and stupid) is Ridiculous. Sure it show Sephiroth killing but it would not effect any normal, healthy person in way to carry out such a horrible act. They need to look at that before they point fingers entertainment. In the last ten years has anything like this happened? Has this "killer game caused any problems?" To blame it now does not make sense to me. Plus, that is some harsh censorship and may have something to do with that. My heart is with the family.

WHAT!! in ten years of this games being around i have never heard of anything like it, and to blame the games its self just because they called them names from the game is wrong.Ive played violent games alot worse then this and ive never been compeled to do anything like they do, because i know its a game. Maybe instead of blaming a most exceillent game they should look at the family that draged them up. Sorry ive rambled but iam mad :(

First off, I am in full agreement with all of the aforementioned comments. Secondly, and more importantly, this is highly disturbing on SOOOOOOO many levels. And, yes, ReseVII, it is a true and bitter shame that now the Final Fantasy series, one of the few clean and decent games left on the major game market. It's a bleedin' shame. Did those dumb-*$&%^# want FF to be blamed?!?!?!? Maximum sentence, i think. But, more rationally, Jail 'em, and ignore anything they say.

Yea, so they used FFVII names... I use the names all over the place, just because they used the names does not mean it should be blamed! Wait one mo before going to a conclusion here, they had it installed, but alongside what else? Who's to say they didn't have some big gangster game installed too? Just because there may be lots of games on it that could have been the main cause and they just thought the FFVII names are cool, does not mean point the finger at something. They may even have done this because they hate the game and just want it gone for good instead of just giving it away! It's a stupid little kiddies joke that got out of hand! If I ran into a bank and stole some money, under the name Eragon, would they ban the brilliant book? Would they ban the **** movie? No. So why do it for FFVII? I'm done... just no-one do it again, PLEASE!

I'm part German, and it sickens me that my people can be so stupid as to blame a harmless video game like this. My mates and I've been playing games for our entire school lives, and we haven't shot anyone (outside a game). I honestly think that something like this is so stupid.

Oh well, if they wanted to go on and play FF7, they should have at least followed the game story, don't this stupid kids even know sephiroth and Reno are enemies.

If you're going out there to try and become a murderer and blame a game, at least do it right.

I bet the girl the couple they murdered wasn't even called Tseng and Aeris....

Put some effort into it...

If I was to be Sephiroth in this story, i'd get myself a really big masamune, so i could be a murederer with style, and I would bring along a radio playing One Winged Angel!

And instead of turning myself in, I'd hide myself in a crater, protecting myself with a mighty barrier, and they would have to build a big cannon to detroy it!

I think that they have trouble realizing that it is just a game, and not game had ever had any influence over me, and I've been playing video games since the Atari. No one I know has ever been affected. It makes no sense to blame the media. And no taint the FFVII with there ignorance is frustrating. It does not matter if Reno and Sephiroth were enemies, they went from the game. Now I know Reno is more common and appears in other games, hell, why not ban those to. Why not ban everything that has to do with Final Fantasy, square-Enix and the entire media and have eveyone sit at home and watch paint dry until they deem that 'killer paint'. If you are going to be stupid at the least you could do is put some effort into it for crying out loud! I'm sorry but this just bugs me!!!

I agree with Sam. The authorities are always blaming objects instead of individuals. The game isn't at fault here...it's the teenagers and their parents who are. A game is a game; the fact that the kids who murdered those people chose names from it as some sort of joke just proves how unstable they were to begin with.

Governments and representatives are so mixed up its unbeleivable. They can blame murder on FFVII yet allow drug and alcohol related crime to skyrocket into this new milenium whilst turning a blind eye (because it generates money for them). They pick the weakest link in the chain and bombard it with allegations when they fail to look at the bigger picture.
