11/21/2006: "Final Fantasy VII on your PSP?"

The possibility of playing Final Fantasy VII on your PSP is now much closer. According to engadget, the new PSP Firmware update will allow your PSP to support downloaded PSOne games. A few PSOne titles are already available for download in Japan but it's still not certain whether FFVII will be among them when the list gets bigger. However at the moment there is a slightly bigger catch. Unless Sony choose to provide an alternative, you'll need a PS3 before you can download any games for your PSP as the store can only be accessed via Sony's new console.

Additonally in the unlikely event that you actually have a PS3, you may encounter a minor problem playing Final Fantasy VII on it. According to Sony's Compatibility Listing, FFVII suffers a slight display anomally on the PS3 with other PSone Final Fantasy games suffering similar graphical problems. Dirge of Cerberus and Final Fantasy X appear to be unaffected.

Finally a reminder to any PAL region gamers. Dirge of Cerberus is now in stores.

Of course the greatest game ever created would have a compatibility problem and thus remain unplayable on my shelf as my PS2 died recently. :( Of course, there is the matter of obtaining one.

Didn't Square-Enix once say that as long as FF7 remained playable on current systems, they wouldn't remake it? This glitch may be minor, but perhaps (if it is never fixed via firmware updates) S-E will remake it. (Ok, it's not likely to happen for PS3, but a PSP release maybe??? I don't see why not.)
