CloudANDTidus will take over news and hosting duties full-time, and there will be one Admin short on the Forums from now on as well. This site means a lot to me, but it is time for me to move on, mainly for some of the same reasons I posted when I shut down blueshinra.com back in February.

CloudANDTidus will keep you all posted on the server/hosting switchover, as well as other changes he has planned. In the meantime, if you'd like to keep in touch, my contact info, social media and gaming accounts, etc. are listed here.

Well, everyone... take care of yourselves!
Posted by Reeve on 03/20/17 at 01:50 PM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZAn Announcementtag:www.ff7citadel.com,2017-03-20:%2Fupdates%2F00000507.shtmlReeveff7citadel\@ff7citadel.com In my role as site host, I was doing some server-side maintenance on the Citadel today and noticed that several years' worth of spam had accumulated on the theory submission page for The Yellow Orb.

That page has now been restored to the time when the last legitimate comments were probably made. From what I can tell, all of the comments made after that were spam, and I did not feel like sifting through hundreds of later posts to find any non-spammy ones. Also, to combat future spam (and therefore, future space-hogging backups made by the commenting system) I have decided to close the page to new comments altogether. Comments may open again sometime in the future, though I can't say when.

My maintenance work is ongoing at this time, so if you find anything else that seems off, please let me know immediately. Thank you!
Posted by Reeve on 03/15/17 at 09:42 PM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZQuick Little Site Updatetag:www.ff7citadel.com,2017-03-20:%2Fupdates%2F00000506.shtmlReeveff7citadel\@ff7citadel.com Just a small update today. I've uploaded a 1924x1080 version of the Final Fantasy VII Remake key visual that Square Enix unveiled at the Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary event in January.

It makes a good wallpaper.
Posted by CloudANDTidus on 03/08/17 at 11:32 AM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZRemake high-res key visualtag:www.ff7citadel.com,2017-03-20:%2Fupdates%2F00000505.shtmlReeveff7citadel\@ff7citadel.com Last month a couple of pictures of Final Fantasy VII Remake were released during Magic Monaco 2017 that showed off the game's combat system. In the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu director Tetsuya Nomura clarified that the combat would be action based.

“Battles are not command-based, they’re action-based. Regarding cover actions, there are places where they can be done on the map, but they are not required. Because it’s seamless, I showed that there can be actions in response to various scenes."

The switch to a real-time combat system is one of the more controversial changes in the remake. It has yet to be seen how closely it will resemble Nomura's Kingdom Hearts franchise, or the recently released Final Fantasy XV, both of which feature similar styles of fighting. Nomura also noted that the Guard Scorpion battle would feature destructible portions of the map.

Source: Gematsu
Posted by CloudANDTidus on 03/07/17 at 09:48 AM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZRemake features action-based combattag:www.ff7citadel.com,2017-03-20:%2Fupdates%2F00000504.shtmlReeveff7citadel\@ff7citadel.com A very quick bit of news: the mobile port of FFVII, which came out last summer for iOS, is now available for Android. The price for it is identical to the App Store's (US$15.99/£11.99 /€15.99), and it appears to be the exact same port, warts and all. Our webmaster did not like the iOS port very much, so caveat emptor.
Posted by Reeve on 07/07/16 at 12:10 PM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZFFVII Mobile Port Now on Androidtag:www.ff7citadel.com,2017-03-20:%2Fupdates%2F00000503.shtmlReeveff7citadel\@ff7citadel.com Game Informer's May cover story is about Final Fantasy XV, but as it happens, there's some Final Fantasy VII Remake news in there as well. Referencing that issue, GameSpot reports that each episode of the Remake will be a full-length installment. The Final Fantasy XIII trilogy in particular is being looked to as a model for the Remake's structure.

According to Yoshinori Kitase, "It will essentially be a full scale game for each part of the multi-part series. In XIII, each instalment told the story from a different angle. It was kind of like approaching an unknown territory in a sense." And: "Whereas with Final Fantasy VII Remake, we already have a preexisting story, so it wouldn't really make sense if that isn't encompassed in a multi-part series... So if we're just looking at each of these parts, one part should be on par with the scale of one Final Fantasy XIII game."

What is still unknown at this time is how many parts the Remake will encompass, and how much new material—for example, quests that could tie into the Compilation's additions to the canon—will be present. Some fans have speculated that each of the original game's three disks will be an installment, but keep in mind that Disk Three is mostly just brief sidequests, the final battle, and the ending. As always, we'll keep you posted.
Posted by Reeve on 04/08/16 at 12:42 PM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZLength of FFVII Remake Installments Will Be "Full Scale"tag:www.ff7citadel.com,2017-03-20:%2Fupdates%2F00000502.shtmlReeveff7citadel\@ff7citadel.com Square Enix announced today that it is shutting down Shinra Technologies, a cloud gaming company that was founded back in September 2014. Shinra, whose tech was apparently never taken beyond the testing phase, had trouble raising money from third-party investors. Come the end of the fiscal year (March 31, 2016), Square Enix will report a two billion yen (US$16.9 million) loss related to Shinra. However, even with Shinra's closure, Square Enix has said that it will "continue to develop our business using cloud technologies".

Source: Gamasutra
Posted by Reeve on 01/05/16 at 10:55 PM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZThere Used to Be a Real Shinra Companytag:www.ff7citadel.com,2017-03-20:%2Fupdates%2F00000501.shtmlReeveff7citadel\@ff7citadel.com Some new info for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/WiiU was unveiled today, including the news that the DLC featuring Cloud and a Midgar-themed stage is now available for purchase. This is an unexpected development, but considering how expensive an FFVII remake would be to make all at once—and also how well FFVII's story lends itself to an episodic structure—it is also a shrewdly sensible one.

We will keep you all posted with more details as we get them.
Posted by Reeve on 12/06/15 at 09:34 PM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZThe FFVII Remake Will Be Episodictag:www.ff7citadel.com,2017-03-20:%2Fupdates%2F00000497.shtmlReeveff7citadel\@ff7citadel.com A bit of a PR fluff went out yesterday in the form of a video interview, produced by Sony, with Yoshinori Kitase. In it, he discusses the original FFVII's impact, as well as what they're hoping to achieve with the Remake's battle system:

I can't say the new game is completely action-based, but it has more of that element and real-time than the previous game. However, what makes Final Fantasy and RPG different from other games is that the players have the ability to choose weapons, capabilities, and magic to be stratgetic-minded, so while the new game has more real-time element, it will also maintain that strategy building element, balancing these two factors perfectly to enhance the gaming experience.
He also goes on to praise the graphics capabilities of the PS4, implying that they can maintain a level of visual quality similar to that of Advent Children on the system.

In other news, a brief new trailer for Mobius Final Fantasy, a smartphone game that launched this past June in Japan, revealed an upcoming FFVII crossover, which includes the Masamune as a log-in bonus.

Source: Anime News Network
Posted by Reeve on 12/06/15 at 01:09 PM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZYoshinori Kitase on the Remake, Mobius Final Fantasy Gets a Tie-intag:www.ff7citadel.com,2017-03-20:%2Fupdates%2F00000496.shtmlReeveff7citadel\@ff7citadel.com Here's one more bit of news from the PlayStation Experience keynote, from when Yoshinori Kitase and Tetsuya Nomura were brought on stage after the newest Remake trailer was shown. For those of you who need yet another copy of the game on yet another platform, one of the things they mentioned was that the original Final Fantasy VII is finally available for PS4 starting today. This port is based on the downloadable PC version that was released awhile ago, and includes trophies.
Posted by Reeve on 12/05/15 at 02:03 PM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZThe Original FFVII Now on PS4tag:www.ff7citadel.com,2017-03-20:%2Fupdates%2F00000495.shtmlReeveff7citadel\@ff7citadel.com The second annual PlayStation Experience event is taking place in San Francisco this weekend, and Sony's keynote is underway as I type this. The keynote opened with a trailer for Uncharted 4, but after that, it was FFVII Remake time, with plenty of all-new footage.

The new FFVII Remake trailer includes English-language voice acting and appearances from Cloud, Barret (wearing sunglasses), Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie. Many recognizable scenes and locations from early on in FFVII were present, including the Guard Scorpion and the flowers in Aerith's church. There were some familiar lines in the spoken dialogue as well.

The most startling parts of the trailer are the brief glimpses at the new battle system, which, on the surface at least, bears strong resemblances to those in the Kingdom Hearts series and FFXV.

The trailer ends with "Play it first on PlayStation 4", which seems to confirm it being a timed exclusive. We would be very surprised if this remake doesn't make its way to PC not long after the PS4 release, and it's possible that it will show up on Xbox One and/or Nintendo's next console (codenamed "NX") as well.

If you'd like to discuss this latest trailer in depth, as usual, we invite you to drop by the FFVII Remake Megathread in the Forums.

Updated 3:55 PM (EST) for official trailer link, clarified exclusivity details.
Updated 6:58 PM (EST) for a correction regarding character appearances.
Posted by Reeve on 12/05/15 at 01:40 PM
2017-03-20T17:51:07Z2017-03-20T17:51:07ZNew FFVII Remake Trailer Shown at PlayStation ExperienceXML::Atom::SimpleFeed2017-03-20T17:51:07ZAn intelligent, informative Final Fantasy VII site for both rookies and veterans. The Final Fantasy VII Citadel
